                      RESOLUTION NO. 20781


              A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND HONORING
            Chief Ralph H. Cothran
                  FOR HIS EXEMPLARY DEDICATION,
              LOYALTY AND OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE
                 CITY OF CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE,
                  AND TO THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE

                  ______________________________


     	  WHEREAS, Ralph Henry Cothran was employed by the City
of Chattanooga Police Department on September 16, 1964, worked
his way up through the ranks and earned his appointment as Chief
of Police on August 1, 1989; and
     	  WHEREAS, throughout Chief Cothran's tenure with the
City of Chattanooga, he was highly respected by his co-workers
and other law enforcement officers, and he exemplified
dedication, loyalty and outstanding service to the citizens of
the City of Chattanooga and the community at large; and
     	  WHEREAS, the City of Chattanooga is in great sorrow
over the death of Chief Cothran on November 2, 1995; and
     	  WHEREAS, Chief Cothran is sorrowfully missed by the
many friends with whom he had worked in the Chattanooga Police
Department and the City of Chattanooga; and
     	  WHEREAS, Chief Cothran has been recognized as a
community bridge- builder, which he indeed was; and,
     	  WHEREAS, while Chief Cothran was a law enforcement
officer, he was also an officer for harmony, peace and integrity;
and
     	  WHEREAS, Chief Cothran left the world a better place

than he found it and a better place in which to live for all
segments of our community;
                         NOW, THEREFORE,
     	  BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE, that Chief Ralph H. Cothran be and is
hereby recognized and honored for his exemplary service to the
City of Chattanooga and the community at large; and
     	  BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this
Resolution be  given to the Family of Chief Ralph H. Cothran by
the Clerk of the City Council.
